(It’s a new year and soon Ill release a new list of affordable Ferrari track eaters, in the meanwhile enjoy this classic list of sports cars and widow makers which are still hard to replace, although there are some new contenders. Stay tuned for my updated list on Friday morning.)
So you’ve worked your fingers to the bone, saved up some scratch and sold a kidney. Now you finally have enough to splurge on a performance track car. It’s a delicate line between reliability and performance but I’ve got you covered. Here are the top 5 you can buy based off overall value and !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!
While you’d like to buy a new Porsche 918 you’re poor as shit, but you want to save face on the track and keep it close with your more fortunate (rich) friends. Looking at reliability, affordability, performance and value I’ve compiled a list of the top cars to beat an exotic with. From 1 - 5 every car on this list can compete with the upper stratosphere of sports and ultra sports cars on a track, and are reliable enough to be used for more than the weekends. So on that mic drop lets proceed to the list.
5 - 2008 Mercedes-Benz CLK63 AMG Black Series Coupe
When it comes to making fast cars, the Germans know what they’re doing. But who knew back in 2008 this car would demand the respect it does on the track today? This is one of the best deals on this list and regarding value, the black series is future collectible.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
4 - 2008 Audi R8 4.2
Audi shocked the automotive world with their new super car coupe. The Audi R8 was the beginning of something most didn’t see coming, Audi’s return to grace. AWD, 420 HP and while a bit on the luxury side, its a capable track competitor. This particular model has depreciated nicely and while looks don’t necessarily determine performance, sometimes to beat an exotic super car, it helps to look like one too. Bring an Audi tech and cash to get a good deal. I would rank this model higher but it has a rebuilt title. I’ve included a clean title model with lower miles.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
3 - 2007 Porsche 911 GT3 Coupe
The pedigree of Porsche is such that no top list of track cars is complete without one. And this one is special. While a 911 GT3 should be considered a bit too rich for list I wouldn’t hesitate on this one as long as I could go over it with a Porsche tech or get the seller to pay for a comprehensive inspection. This 415 HP Ferrari eater is truly an on and off the track beast. Its truly numbing, satisfying and even inspirational to know you can pass a v12 super car in a flat six Porsche.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
2 - 2009 Nissan GT-R
The GTR was such a pleasant surprise when it hit the market and it put traditional super sports car makers on notice. It pushed car developers to step their game up and really paved the way for gems like the 458 down to BRZ/FRS. With the country coming out of a recession it was a car meant to let us play with seemingly out of reach exotic cars and hurt their driver’s feelings. Just riding in one harkens back to the nostalgic Ferrari scene in Fast in the Furious with that rebuilt Toyota Supra. There’s a twinge of sadness to that sweet nostalgia. This is definitely a car to be respected. (Keep it on the track boys)
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
1 - 2009 Dodge Viper ACR
2009 was a great year for sports cars. Dodge’s answer to the Porsche 911 GT3 RS was a slick track car that could compete with top exotic super (and dare I say ultra?) sports cars on the weekends. With one of the quickest lap times, most readily available parts and dominating power, the 2009 Dodge Viper ACR takes top marks. This car with the ACR trim level can easily become a collectible in the future. And who can argue with these specs?

Missing from this list are the obvious, Corvette and Camaro. While both cars latest iterations are an insane improvement and demonstrate American engineering can dominate racetracks worldwide, the cars needed to make this list are slightly too expensive. That’s partly because they’re new straight off a dealers lot if not ordered directly from the factory. I wanted to find collectible gems a wider audience could afford. So let a little depreciation set in. They’ll be on here next year
But what do you say? I’m just an idiot who goes through used cars like underwear. What’s on your list of top affordable Ferrari Eaters?

I read on forums that the R8 is surprisingly solid for track use. It's heavy and has a lot of luxury but it apparently can endure a lot of track miles without breaking down

I 100% endorse everything on this list except the WRX. I'm fairly sure that, with two equal drivers, a stock STI would be very far behind a Ferrari very quickly.

It would totally depend on the Ferrari, as the WRX wouldn't have a shot against an Enzo but a California would definitely be within reach.

Really it's the driver more than the car. If the driver in the STi is able to get closer to the limit of it than the guy in say a 458 is able then the STi is likely going to win. Now if both drivers are both at the limits it really depends on other racing things like weather, traffic, track position, and tires. So many different factors in motorsport.

And the V10 version is the best modern German car you can be used for under $130K

Under ideal conditions, with driver not being a factor (let's say same driver, a pro) I think a Ferrari would be able to outrun the STI. Until recently, it might've ben able to keep up with the California, but the new one is a twin-tubo, so that might be about to end.

Yeah, on paper the Ferrari is the faster car but races aren't run on paper! I agree, but again it's almost never "ideal conditions" on a race track though.

I agree and wanted to post something to that effect but you beat me to it.
So I'll just add this and, this . That's 483 C6 Zo6s and ZR1s, and 1282 C7s meeting the same criteria as the other cars on the list (price, reliability, performance, etc.) and even includes loads of BRAND NEW C7 CORVETTES. Granted, the C7s haven't put down any official 'Ring laps yet, but they've outpaced the C6 Z06, which has, so it's safe to say they too, would beat most Ferraris.

Last I read, the C7 Stingray was just a hair shy of beating the C6 Z06. Either way, it's still a good result and price is still no excuse. This is actually the second time this poster has gone out of his way to "avoid" Corvettes in such a post, I think he just doesn't like them. Which is fine, but he should just say so instead of trying to make up reasons to leave them out, reasons that are untrue.

I'm with you on all of them except the R8 4.2 because it's not really that fast. It's a good track car and it's way too fast to be driven anywhere near the limit on the street but on the track a giant slayer it is not.
Instead, I would recommend an R8 5.2 V10, a modified Cayman S with more power, or any one of those small track cars such as the Ariel Atom.
Theres also a huge omission in the shape of either the old C6 Corvette ZR1 or the new C7 Zo6.

Rumors from within GM are that it is bettering its lap times on the proving grounds by a tad, and the new Z06 is beating the C6 ZR1. Also, according to C&D's lightning lap testing the C7 Z51 was only 3 tenths behind the C6 Z06 with the Z07 package but almost five seconds ahead of an earlier "regular" Z06. And just for shits and giggles, the new Camaro Z28 beat the C7 by almost 3 seconds... So there's that.

Everyone always forgets the most underrated track car ever: The Cobalt SS. Yes, the car was shite, but you can destroy WRXs all day long with them. Its ring time is still faster than the Focus RS, Porsche Cayman S and Exige S. That was stock. You can get another couple hundred HP out of them really easily.

I vote for this. You know the car they could have had instead that is so much better that Ferrari refuses to let it be tested head to head with the 458
But if you really want to embarrass then with something ugly, the Nismo GTR is the only way to go.
Also why is there no Z06 on this list??? Even the C6 Z06 can beat most ferraris.
And id love to see a TeslaD on the track to see how it fairs. It is likely too heavy to be fast but i bet its embarrassingly close to a ferrari. Plus you can put kids in the back rear facing to tease the Ferrari when you get in front.

I think his reasoning was fair. All of these on a the list are a bit more rare and more collectible than a C6 or C7. If he just left them off the list for no reason then I would see a problem but his reasoning's seem just. Also, you have to remember there are only 5 spots on the list, you cannot put every car that fits into this question in 5 spots. You can post lists full of Vettes and Miatas until the sun don't shine but at some point its nice to get other vehicles in those spots to let people know other great options are out there.

All of these cars seem too heavy for being compared, bar maybe the 911.
Surely for $60k the answer would be a Honda NSX($20k) with a LS twin turbo($26k) at very reliable boost levels and thus just a pedestrian 700 whp while being cheap to fix if anything breaks. $14k to upgrade suspension and brakes, to get a rollbar and fuel cell installed and to gut what needs gutting to make it weigh about 2200 lbs.
Should whip all of the above by loads per lap.
Won't be nearly as comfortable as the above to drive home, but it will get the primary job done and not make it look like all the owner is capable of, is to write big check. And it can always be fitted with 200 lbs of luxury padding and sound stuff for the daily driving if that's an issue.
A heavily modded WRX to amateur rallycross spec is also a possibility but it will be less reliable on the street.
If it has to be a (imo tame, pointless and not exciting) stock car then the GT-R is probably the easy-peasy choice on the list, but it won't excite much.

No mention of a Cobra replica? With their insane power to weight ratio I bet a well-driven Factory Five IRS car would embarrass the typical Ferrari owner. Or, if the Cobra lacked the top-end speed for longer tracks their GTM could stand in. Plus you'd have the bonus of beating a factory-built car with one you built yourself for under $100k. Under $50k in the case of the Cobra.

I wouldn't say slow as hell they have nearly 300hp but a really competent chassis excellent steering and really good cornering ability and when I think of cars to beat the more exotic stuff around a race track I immediately think about cars that have exceptional handling and really modifiable engine like an r32 skyline or an fd rx7 you can do alot of damage to someone's ego with a 400hp bridgeported single turbo 13b rx7 when they have a much much more expensive car plus I have seen some really amazing things done with an nsx for track use that's why I asked if modified cars were acceptable in my opinion as long as its done correctly you can have a really really great track car for way less money than something from marenello or with the shield from Stuttgart on its nose

A Boss 302 LS is faster than most of these and cheaper than all of them. Cheaper still is a 996 Turbo or one of Roush's 600+ hp Mustangs. How a Viper ACR made this list and a ZO6 or ZR1 vette doesn't is beyond comprehension.

Well, it's not quite that slow. First of all, that time you have for the R8 is for the original R8 4.2 back in 2007 and it has gone through many upgrades since then with a big update in 2011. The 4.2 can run with a 911, it just can't keep up with a Ferrari.
The sub 8 time for an STI was actually a prototype that was quite far from any production car (let alone one sold in the US). I would also suspect that it was not on street tires. http://www.caranddriver.com/features/2011-…

Nice. That's pretty much the way I'd build one if I ever have the $. What did the motor cost? Years ago I helped a friend build his FFR Mk3, and he went the donor route with a built 5.0 out of a '91 Mustang GT with its 8.8 SRA. At around 330hp, that car was seriously fun; I can't imagine a 420hp Coyote in that chassis. That would take a while to learn to drive fast I'd think with limited traction.

I don't know about the Z06 beating the 5.2 Audi, and surprising as it is that's coming from someone who isn't a huge Audi fan (I'm thinking of changing the name).
But anyway, The C6 ZR1 can only beat the Audi and Cayman (depending on how little the Cayman is modified) while the 2012 GT-R is barely faster than it (with subsequent GT-Rs being even faster).
As for the upcoming C7 Zo6, I think only the Ariel Atom 500 can beat it, or maybe a GT-R Nismo.

OK, but what's the 8th fastest car at Nuremberg? A Donkervoort - aka a 7 with aero. It's got a Audi 1.8T... 7:14 lap times, only 2 seconds slower than a Viper ACR. Sure, it's 85k euro (inc. VAT), but you could get similar speed from a bunch of other seven style cars- the Caterham 620R is only $72k USD.

I was using the Sport Auto times for my reference. http://www.sportauto.de/rundenzeiten-n… I think that times mean a lot more when they all come from the same source.
As for that super fast Z06 time that beat the GT-R, the car was not only modified but was running on slicks.
As for the Cayman, I said "modified Cayman" meaning it could be any number of insane creations, however, unless it's something from 9FF or the like it probably isn't going to beat the GT-R or a Ferrari. But all that aside, a stock Cayman GTS can trounce cars with way more horsepower in terms of lap times, just not the ones considered here.

For those who have the opportunity to drive something nice like this best to take it out early mornings on the weekend mornings. NO cops, no dickheads who purposely want to crash into you and no idiot comments or haters to deal with. Other wise take the beater car out and thrash around town. Very easy in so.cal to get a 911 phone call on you for reckless driving.

I have always had a feeling about the R8 4.2. While everyone went apeshit about the V10, I always thought yes its underpowered, but it's also lighter. If a person was careful with the order sheet on a 4.2 they could have one kickass little car.

I don't. Multiple sources means law of averages is in greater effect, and it means more counterbalancing is going on with the coverage. Even so, that's an incomplete list anyway.
And, if you're going to count a highly modified Cayman at all, that's no reason to discount the Z06 whose only actual modification was tires...tires that were still street-legal. I would cite the source (and also note possible bias) but it appears to have been removed. If you can point out what modifications were done to the Z06 and cite them, I'll accept it. Otherwise, the claim of factory spec outside of tires is more believable than the claim of "highly modified."

I am shocked this list excludes actual track cars like the BAC Mono and the Ariel Atom.

Why not just go for a track car like an Ariel Atom, BAC Mono, etc?

So you are ignoring everything else but that one sentence? He also says right in the next sentence "I wanted to find collectible gems a wider audience could afford." Taking both sentences into account its clear why he did not put the C6 or C7 on the list. It just seems like you are nitpicking because someone made a list without a Corvette on it. Also, they cannot shame the ACR either.

Thanks, I was just curious if they could actually put down laps in stock form like the others on the list.

Good on you for making me look this up. I couldn't believe it, as I've seen an SS or two at the autocross and they didn't seem well sorted. I guess you need the later turbocharged edition if you want it to handle.

What if you combine a few cars? Does that count? I can match an F40 from 60-120 in dodge's second quickest model from the Diamler Era: http://oppositelock.jalopnik.com/cheap-tricks-1…

Why does nobody remember the Evo X? They're basically awful road cars/factory track weapons.

Yup you're right, I looked again and it's 8:01 for the new R8 4.2.
Thing is I've also actually driven the R8 4.2 and it still feels really slow. Beautifully balanced, wonderfully set up (never thought such a low slung sports car could be so comfortable over bumps and potholes), but disappointingly slow.

They held a 'Ring record for FWD at the time, and lapped it faster than a lot of respected cars. Their just really rare compared to the SC cars and are still stuck with a Cobalt interior so they don't get much respect.

Been to lots of track days in my time, the cars you listed will run with no mods all day long without complaint, except possibly the GT-R tranny going into limp mode. All the other cars I see always need to be modified in some way to survive. And if you brought your other car to the track and it was fine......you were not driving fast enough to keep up.
